Crowns or ‘caps’ have been used in dentistry for a very long time. They are usually used to strengthen a tooth that may be heavily filled, root filled or damaged. They are also used to improve the appearance of teeth and sometimes to improve the alignment.  A crown can also be used to close spaces or replace a missing tooth or teeth.

Crowns and bridges can be made from different materials.  There are many different types and makes of crown and they all have their own merits and indications.

Sometimes you may have seen when someone smiles there is a black line or mark above their tooth. This shows that the crown is made from metal and porcelain.  The line is due to the fact that if the gum receeds slightly over time, the metal sub structure begins to be visible.

With modern technology crowns and bridges can be made to look very natural and blend in with the rest of your teeth, so that no one will identify which one is the crown.

A crown is an irreversible process as tooth has to be removed to create space for the new crown. This is important to remember when considering treatment, especially if alternative less destructive options are available.

Also crowns will not respond to tooth whitening, so if you are considering having a crown or many crowns you may want to think about whitening your teeth first.   At myFACE we will guide you in choosing the ideal crown or treatment for your needs.
